Virgil Lee Stout, 81 of Waterloo, IL born August 3, 1940, in St. Louis, MO, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, June 29, 2022, at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
Virgil retired after 50 years from May Company/Famous Barr in Downtown St. Louis, where he was the manager of the EDP department. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a former member of St. Catherine's Laboure Catholic Church in Cahokia, IL.
Virgil was known for his fiery red hair awarding him the nickname "Red." He was an avid sports fan and a tried-and-true fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and attended games in all three stadiums. In his younger years, Virgil would tote his three young daughters to the stadium with cooler in hand full of juice boxes and hotdogs wrapped in foil to watch from the bleachers, later in life he enjoyed going to the stadium with the entire family to take in a game and worked his way up to the green seats, living out a dream of his, courtesy of daughter Becky. Not only did he enjoy watching the game of baseball, but he played the game as well as a young child in empty lots with his brother Vern and played fast pitch softball well into his 40's. In 2012, Virgil "Red" was inducted into the St. Charles County Amateur Sports Hall of Fame for fastpitch softball. He knew everything there was to know about the game and he shared that passion with his friends and family.
But what Virgil loved most in life, was being surrounded by his family, especially his wife of 37 years, Irene. Rarely did you see them apart. He enjoyed vacationing, especially to Branson and a couple of trips to California, Texas and a very memorable vacation to Disney where he pushed his pregnant daughter Nichole through the park in a wheelchair because he didn't want her on her feet all day. Virgil also loved golfing with his son Lee, but he did not enjoy riding in the golf cart with him…let's just say, there was a little incident one time on the golf course. You could always expect to see Virgil in the stands cheering on his grandchildren at many sporting events over the years. Later in life, Virgil enjoyed watching old westerns from the comfort of his recliner, usually with a grandchild in his lap, the remote resting perfectly on his belly and ending his day with a sweet treat, Virgil loved his sweets, especially his daughter Lori's cheesecake.
Virgil was a humble, caring, selfless man, who was quick witted and had an extraordinary sense of humor. He loved to make his kids laugh and when daughter Natalia was a little girl he would holler out AY-OOO-GA when she grabbed his nose. He was kind to everyone he met and was always willing to lend a hand, even to a stranger. Virgil was incredibly loved and he will be deeply missed by his friends and family.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil N. and Mildred Cox, his brother Vernon L. Stout, and Sister-in-Law Rose.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Surviving is his loving wife, Irene nee Silva, his children; Lori Banks (Tim Pijaszek) of Smithton, IL, Becky (Don) Dunn of St. Charles, MO, Nichole (Ken) Urban of O'Fallon, MO, Michael Torrez of Granite, City, IL, Natalia (David) Hansberger of Edwardsville, IL, and Lee Stout of Waterloo, IL. 1 Sister Betty (Jim) Semas of Freemont, CA. Grandchildren; Laura, Sarah (Ben), Emily, Lexi, A.J., Brianna, Grace, Jillian, Cortney, Katelyn (Johnathan), Kaleb, Tyler, Tanner, Tucker, Elanor, Mechelle and Aspen. Great Grandchildren; William, Anna, Wesson, Kole, Karter & Kinzler. Virgil was a dear uncle, cousin and friend to many.

Visitation will be on Tuesday July 5, 2022, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Braun Family Funeral Home 265 Quarry Rd., Columbia, IL
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday July 6, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Jefferson Barracks Natl. Cemetery in St. Louis, MO.
