Norma J. Hawickhorst, nee Bushue, 82, of Columbia, IL, born September 8, 1936, in Effingham, IL, died Saturday, February 9, 2019, surrounded by her family.
During her career as a registered nurse, Mrs. Hawickhorst worked at St. Louis Altenheim and Koch Hospital in St. Louis. She was a graduate of St. John's Nursing School in Springfield, IL. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Columbia, IL, and was a "Master Gardener."
Mrs. Hawickhorst was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald "Jerry" Hawickhorst; her parents, Raymond and Marie, nee Rieman, Bushue; a sister, Dorothy "Dottie" Hayden; a brother-in-law, Bob Smith; and a son-in-law, Joe Schmader III.
Surviving are her children, Gregg (Julie) Hawickhorst of Columbia, IL, Mark (Craiza) Hawickhorst of Columbia, MO, Brad (Robin) Hawickhorst of Portsmouth, VA, Lynn Schmader of Wildwood, MO, Kurt (LeAnn) Hawickhorst of Virginia Beach, VA, and Kay Hawickhorst of Millersville, MD; two sisters, Betty (Larry) Brown of Effingham, IL, and Glenda Smith of Arvada, CO; a brother-in-law, Mark Hayden of Stafford, VA; 13 grandchildren, Kevin, Carrie, David, Kate Lynn, Amber, Nicole (Justin), Leigh, Bryan, Anna, Laura, Scott, Matt, and Josh; and three great grandchildren, Winter, Oliver, and Cecilia.

A Gathering of Family and Friends will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m on Friday, February 15, 2019, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Columbia, IL. A Memorial Mass will follow at 12:30 p.m. with Msgr. Carl Scherrer officiating. Burial will be at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, MO. Braun Family Funeral Home, Columbia, IL, is in charge of the arrangements.
