Marie Theresa
Malawy
Dec 30, 1933 — Jun 5, 2026
Washongton
Marie Malawy, née Smugala, was born on December 30, 1933, in Posen, Washington County, Illinois. She passed away peacefully on June 5, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family, leaving behind a legacy of faith, devotion, and family values that will be cherished for generations.
On May 7, 1955, Marie married the love of her life, Eugene Malawy, in Posen, Illinois. Together they built a life centered on family, hard work, and enduring love. Their marriage was blessed with five children, who were the pride and joy of her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Mary (nee Krus) Smugala, beloved husband Eugene Malawy, great-grandson Roman Alexander Lockett, siblings Clara (Wilbert) Bailey, Rose (Harry) Malawy, Leonard Smugala, Mike Smugala, brother-in-law Richard Romeo, son-in-law Paul Fraser, and many other family members who welcomed her into eternal rest.
Marie is survived by her children: Randy (Kathy) Malawy, Eugene Michael (Claudia) Malawy, Janice (Mike) Davis, Rod (Angie) Malawy, Rick (Kate) Malawy, and Cindy Fraser. She is also survived by her sister Helen Romeo and sisters-in-law Marcella Smugala, Dorothy Malawy, and Velma Malawy.
She was also blessed with fifteen grandchildren: Josh Malawy, Jeff (Eunice) Malawy, Eric (Emily) Malawy, Tyler (Lindsey) Davis, Ryan (Ai) Malawy, Meghan Dittman, Trista (Eric) Lockett, Jenna (Alex) Horsfield, Natalie (Dusty) Simmons, Justin (Alex) Kruenegel, Courtney (Gregory) Arnett, Ali (Evan) Westover, Emma Malawy, Grace Malawy, and Lucy Malawy. Marie cherished each of her grandchildren and took great pride in their accomplishments, milestones, and growing families. She was a proud great-grandmother to her 31 great-grandchildren who lovingly called her Babu.
Marie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She found great happiness in spending time with her family, celebrating life's special moments with those she loved, and was always up for a round of cards (for money). Her kindness, strength, and unwavering dedication to her family will be remembered by all who knew her. Marie was a member of parishes OLPH (Posen) and Immaculate Conception (Washington). Her love of the Lord was a driving force in her life and she was devoted to praying the rosary daily.
Though her presence will be deeply missed, Marie's legacy lives on through her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all those whose lives she touched with her warmth and generosity.
The family finds comfort in the many cherished memories they shared with Marie and in knowing that her love will remain in their hearts forever.
