Obituary

FRED E. CORNWELL, 75, of Cahokia, Illinois, born March 9, 1942 in East St. Louis, Illinois, died Thursday, August 31, 2017, at St. Clare Hospital in Fenton, Missouri.

Fred was retired from the Village of Cahokia after 38 years, where he served as Superintendent of the Street Dept. and the Park Dept. He was a member of the Operating Engineers Local 520 of Granite City, IL for 41 years. After his retirement, Fred volunteered his time to manage The Prairies of Cahokia Golf Course. Starting with his childhood, he always had a love of horses and in his adult life owned and trained several race horses. He was a member of the Horsemen Benevolent and Protective Association (HBPA) and East Lodge 504 A.F. & A.M.of Fairview Heighta, IL.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Effell and Nadine, nee Trusty, Cornwell; three brothers, Glynn, Tom, and Don Cornwell; and a sister, Judi Deering.

Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Mary L. Cornwell, nee Coleman; his children, Pat Cornwell of East Carondelet, IL, Gary (Dawn) Cornwell of Cahokia, IL, Amy (Kevin Brergman II) Howlett of Cahokia, IL, and Freddie Cornwell of Cahokia, IL; a brother, Gene Cornwell of Washington D.C.; four sisters, Helen (Walter) Grater of Georgia, Faye Statler of Belleville, IL, Jaci (Buddy) Carrigan of Kentucky, and Kathi (Bruce) Arnold of Granite City, IL; eight grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. He was a dear brother-in-law, uncle, cousin, and friend.

In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer that memorials be given to the HBPA at Fairmont Race Track.

Friends may visit from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, September 4, 2017 at Braun Colonial Funeral Home, Cahokia, Illinois. A Masonic Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 5, 2017, at the funeral home, with Pastor Steve Willeford officiating. Burial will be at Valhalla Gardens of Memory, Belleville, Illinois.
